New multifamily housing projects developed with HUD assistance must be designed and constructed to be readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities. A minimum of five percent of the total dwelling units, or at least one unit, whichever is greater, must be accessible for persons with mobility impairments, and an additional two percent of the units, but not less than one unit, must be accessible for persons with hearing or vision impairments. A unit on an accessible route that is adaptable and otherwise complies with the standards in 24 CFR 8.32 counts as accessible. The percentages are floors: HUD may prescribe a higher number for an area on a demonstrated need.
